Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Tuesday trashed the probe report submitted by police on the attacks on Hindu people at Nasirnagar, saying it was done only to protect a local ruling party lawmaker and a minister.

BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said, ‘The police have submitted a false and fabricated report yesterday (Monday) over attacks on Hindu people, torching and damaging their houses and worship palaces in Brahmanbaria’s Nasirnagar. They implicated Nasirnagar upazila BNP vice-president Jamal Uddin and union vice-president Billa Hossain along with 18 ruling Awami League leaders and activists.’

Speaking at a press briefing at BNP’s Naya Paltan central office, he further said, ‘We strongly condemn and protest implicating our two local leaders with the incident in the police report. We also turn down the false probe report. In fact, this report was prepared to save a local lawmaker and a minister.’

The BNP leader said implicating two BNP leaders with the incident is not only an absurd matter but also an evil attempt to hush up the misdeeds of the ruling party men.

He alleged that the main motive behind implicating the two local BNP leaders is to hide the ruling party men’s involvement in the incident.

Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said media reports revealed that the Nasirnagar attacks were an outcome of a conflict between a local minister and a lawmaker.

He demanded that the names of the two BNP leaders from the report submitted by the police be dropped.

On 30 October, an unruly mob equipped with sharp weapons went berserk and demolished a number of temples and nearly 100 houses of Hindus in Nasirnagar upazila following a rumour of a Facebook post demeaning the holy Kaaba.
