Bodi’s bail challenged
Dhaka: The Anti-Corruption Commissions (ACC) on Thursday filed an appeal with the High Court challenging the lower court’s verdict that acquitted Awami League Lawmaker Abdur Rahman Bodi in a case filed for accumulating wealth beyond his known sources of income.
The ACC filed the petition with the relevant bench of the HC seeking cancellation of the acquittal, said its lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan.
Earlier on 2 November, a court here sentenced Bodi, an MP from Cox’s Bazar-4 constituency, to three years’ in jail in a case filed for concealing information about his wealth. The court also fined Bodi Tk 10lakh, and he will have to suffer in jail for another six months in case of failure to pay the fine.
It also acquitted Bodi in the case filed for accumulating wealth beyond his known sources of income.
Soon after the verdict, Bodi was sent to Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj on 2 November.
Meanwhile, the High Court on 16 November granted a six-month bail to Bodi in a case filed for concealing information about his wealth following an appeal filed by him.
On 9 September, 2015, a Dhaka court framed charges against Bodi in the case. On 21 August, 2014, the ACC filed the case with Ramna Police Station accusing Bodi of amassing illegal wealth.
The Dhaka court sent Bodi to jail in the case rejecting his bail petition on 12 October, 2014. Later, the High Court granted a six-month anticipatory bail to the lawmaker on 27October.
According to the case statement, Bodi concealed information about his wealth worth more than Tk 108.6million amassed from unknown sources.
The case statement also shows that Badi owned property worth Tk 4.979 million in 2008. In an income statement sent to ACC in 2013, he stated that he owned assets of Tk 160.7 million.
On 7 May last year, the ACC submitted chargesheet in the case.
