Gaibandha: A Gaibandha court on Thursday granted bail to two Santal men -- Bimal Kislu and Charan Soren-in a case filed over attacking police during a clash with the law enforcers and workers of Rangpur Sugar Mill in Gobindaganj upazila.

Judge of Gobindaganj Judicial Magistrate court Taskinul Haque passed the order after hearing on a bail petition.

On Tuesday, a court here sent the two indigenous men to jail rejecting their bail petitions after police produced them before the court.

Meanwhile, police arrested five people from nearby Santal Polli early Thursday several hours after a case was filed against 600 people in connection with the attack on Santal people in the upazila.

Swapan Murmu, a leader of the indigenous community, filed the case with the police station on Wednesday night, said Subrata Kumar Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Gobindaganj Police Station.

The arrestees are Manik Sarkar, Choyan Miah, Badshah Miah, Abdur Rashid and Shah Newsaj.

Two Santal men were killed and 30 people, including nine policemen, injured in a series of clashes following an attempt by sugar mill workers of Rangpur Sugar Mill to evict the Santals from the mill area with the help of the law enforcers in Gobindaganj upazila on November 6.

Later, police filed a case against 350 people in connection with the incident.

Following the incident, police arrested four injured Santal men, including Bimal and Charan, from the spot and admitted them to Rangpur Medical College Hospital under police custody.
