HC wants to know govt initiatives to rescue ‘abducted’ physician
Dhaka: The High Court (HC) on Sunday ordered the authorities concerned to inform it the initiatives they have taken to rescue Dr Iqbal Mahmud, a government physician who was reportedly abducted on October 14, within 10 days.
The court also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the ‘inactivity’ of the law enforcement agencies to rescue the doctor will not be regarded as their ‘failure’.
A two-member HC bench comprising Justice Tariq ul Hakim and Justice Md. Faruque came up with the order and issued the rule after hearing on a writ petition.
Home Secretary, IGP, Director General (DG) of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner, Officer-in-charge of Dhanmondi Police Station and five other people were asked to comply with the and respond to the rule within four weeks.
On October 14, Dr Iqbal Mahmud (28th BCS) came to Dhaka from Laxmipur riding a bus in the early morning to take part in a course at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU).
As he got down from the bus at Science Laboratory in the city a group of 5/6 people picked him up and fled the scene riding a microbus.
The whole incident was recorded in a close circuit camera installed adjacent to the spot.
Following the incident, victim’s father AKM Nurul Amin filed a case with Dhanmondi Police Station.
As police didn’t take any step to rescue his son, Nurul Amin filed the writ petition with the HC on Tuesday.
