Writ seeks judicial inquiry into attack on Santals
Dhaka: A writ was filed with the High Court on Monday seeking a judicial investigation into the attack on the Santal community in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha district.
The petitioner also sought the court directive to the Law secretary and the Home Affairs secretary for submitting the report after investigation by the judicial commission.
Lawyer Jotirmoy Barua filed the petition with the relevant section of the court on behalf of the two affected Santal men.
The hearing on the writ will be held on Tuesday.
The petitioner also sought a court rule seeking an explanation as to why the arson attack, looting and firing in the name of eviction would not be declared illegal and why an order will not be issued for taking action against those involved in the attack under the criminal law.
Twelve people, including four secretaries and local MPs, were made respondents to the writ.
Two Santal men were killed and 27 people, including nine policemen, injured following a clash with law enforcers and workers of Rangpur Sugar Mill in Gobindaganj upazila on November 6.
The clash broke out when workers of Rangpur Sugar Mills along with police went to Bagda Farm area to reclaim land of the sugar mill allegedly occupied by the Santal community.
