Bagerhat: A man was beaten and poisoned to death by some miscreants at Basabati in Bagerhat on Thursday night.

The deceased is Tapan Kumar Sheel, in his fifties, a barber.

Quoting Ankhi Sheel Rani, wife of Tapan Sheel, police said Tapan went missing since he went out of his shop after getting call from a young man.

Miscreants took Tapan to an abandoned house, beat him up mercilessly and poured poison into his mouth. Tapan managed to make a phone call to his wife informing her the incident.

Later, he was rescued from the house and taken to Sadar hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at about 8:30pm.

Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Bagerhat Model Police Station, said the Tapan might have killed following dispute over a land with his in-laws.

Police arrested Basudeb Sarkar, around 52 years, for his suspected involvement in the killing.
