Satkhira Jamaat activist killed in ‘gunfight’

Jessore: An activist of Satkhira Jamaat-e-Islami was killed in a reported gunfight between his cohorts and police at Ramnagar in Jessore Sadar early Friday.
The deceased was Shahidul Islam,35, son of Nur Ali of Satkhira.
Kotwali police officer in-charge Enamul Haque said a gang of criminals was coming to the area by a microbus and police gave signal to a microbus when it reached Picnic Corner of the area at about 2:15am.
Defying the police signal, the criminals fired at the police from the microbus, forcing the law enforcers to fire back, trigging a gunfight, the officer added.
Shahidul was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, said police.
However, police could not arrest anyone as the other associates of Shahidul managed to flee the scene, the police officer said.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Jessore Medical College Hospital morgue.
