Dhaka: At least 3,080 people were killed and 7,918 others injured in 2,717 accidents across Bangladesh in the last 11 months till November 30.

The fatal accidents took place on the roads, highways, national roads and regional roads across the country.

Among them, at least 218 people, including 25 women and 28 children, were killed and 272 others injured in 172 road accidents only in the last month, according to a survey and observation report of a non-government organization, the National Committee to Protect Shipping, Roads and Railways (NCPSRR).

The organization on Thursday published its regular monthly survey and observation report in a press release. 

The road accidents and deaths have reduced in the country in the past 11 months of the ongoing year in comparison with the same period of the previous year, the release said.

The report was prepared on the basis of media reports published in 20 national dailies, eight online news portals and news services and 10 regional newspapers.

The NCPSRR report said the country witnessed at least 4,268 road accidents from January to November in the previous year 2015 when at least 6,624 people died and at least 12,840 were injured.

As a result, the report shows the number of road accidents, deaths and injuries had reduced in the ongoing year in comparison with the previous year.

Ashis Kumar Dey, general secretary of the NCPSRR, said they identified seven vital reasons for the accidents during the survey. 

These are: Lack of implementation of law to stop plying unfit vehicles, employing unskilled drivers without having any legal license, reckless driving, overloading and overtaking tendency of the drivers violating laws, not following traffic rules and regulation, long-time driving without any interval and finally, a number of risky turning points on several roads and highways and dilapidated roads.

The NCPSRR also mentioned five reasons for the positive change in the road accident scenario.

These are: growing public awareness by publishing reports on road transportation in media around the year, arranging different programs against road accidents by different social organizations, road transport and bridges' minister's active presence on roads, increased responsibility of police personnel and mobile courts against faulty vehicles and fake driving licenses and identifying different risky turning points followed by establishing cautionary signs in those spots and road repair.
