High Court on Sunday ordered the arrest of the people reportedly responsible for tying a housewife with a tree and torturing her brutally.

The court also asked the authorities concerned to ensure health care and security of the women who was subjected to the violent assault.

Narail district administrator, police superintendent, upazila nirbahi officer and police officer-in-charge were asked to implement the orders by 48 hours.

The district administrator and officer-in-charge were asked to submit a report by 18 May on whether the order was accomplished within the time they were received.

A high court bench comprising judges Kazi Rezaul Haque and Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman passed the order following a hearing on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Advocate Manzil Morshed.

The advocate said he took the violent incident to the notice of the court after being informed by newspapers.

Housewife Babita was severely tortured by her husband, brother-in-law, father-in-law, mother-in-law, uncle-in-law and their several neighbours at Kashipur in Narail on 30 April 2015.

Babita from Arenda village married Shfique Islam from neighbouring village Kashipur in 2013.

Her family claimed that the in-laws were reluctant to accept Babita in their family and at one stage Shafiqul snapped all communications with Babita.

The victim then filed a case against Shafiqul who later accepted her taking dowry. Babita went to her in-laws’ house on 29 April and was subjected to the torture on 30 April.

Babita’s mother Khadiza Begum filed a case against the alleged torturers in women and children repression prevention act.
