Dhaka: The Appellate Division is set to pronounce its judgment on Wednesday in a case involving the 2004 attack on the then British envoy Anwar Choudhury on an appeal by earlier convicted HuJI leaders Mufti Abdul Hannan and Sharif Shahedul Alam.

The High Court earlier upheld their death sentences originally handed down by a trial court promoting the two to file the appeal in their efforts to save their necks.

A four-member Appellate Division panel of the Supreme Court (SC) headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha set the date after concluding hearing on the appeal.

A trial court on December 23, 2008, sentenced Mufti Hannan, Bipul and Delwar Hossain, leaders of Harkat ul-Jihad al-Islami (HuJI), to death in the case. It also sentenced Mohibullah and Abu Jandal to life imprisonment.

After the order, the death reference of the case along with other documents came to the High Court (HC). Moreover, the convicts also filed appeals against the verdict in 2009.

After hearing the case, The HC on February 11, 2016, upheld sentences of all the five convicts.

On May 21, 2004, attack took place at the Hazrat Shahjalal Shrine in Sylhet, resulting in the deaths of three, injuring around 50 people including the British envoy of Bangladesh origin.
