Dhaka: The International Anti-Corruption Day will be observed in the country tomorrow as elsewhere across the world.

The United Nations declared 9 December as Anti-Corruption Day to strengthen the anti-graft movement across the world.

The theme of this year is ‘United against corruption for development, peace and security’.

According to UN website, every year $1 trillion is paid in bribes while an estimated $2.6 trillion are stolen annually through corruption - a sum equivalent to more than five percent of the global GDP.

In developing countries, according to the United Nations Development Programme, funds lost to corruption are estimated at 10 times the amount of official development assistance.

‘Corruption is a serious crime that can undermine social and economic development in all societies. No country, region or community is immune. This year UNODC and UNDP have developed a joint global campaign, focusing on how corruption affects education, health, justice, democracy, prosperity and development,’ the site read.

The 2016 joint international campaign focuses on corruption as one of the biggest impediments to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As part of the programme of the day, Bangladesh Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has taken elaborate progrmmes.

ACC acting chairman Dr Nasiruddin will inaugurate the day programme centrally by releasing pigeons and ballons at 9am on the premises of the commission in the city’s Segunbagicha.

Besides, a human-chain would be formed against corruption in front of Jatiya Press Club at 9.15 am. The ACC chairman will join it.

Later, the commission will host a discussion at Jatiya Natyashala auditorium at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy at about 10:00am.

Former governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Mohammad Faras Uddin will attend it as chief guest while and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Bangladesh Country Director Sudipto Mukerjee as special guest.

In accordance with the central programme, the commissions’ divisional offices in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Sylhet and Barisal and 22 combined district offices will stage human chains and discussions against corruption across the country.

Besides, different socio-culture organization will organize different programme.
