Dhaka: Denouncing police action on Bangladesh Chhatra Union activists, Health Minister and 14-party spokesperson Mohammad Nasim on Tuesday said 14-Party does not support such police excesses.

‘Fourteen-Party condemned the attacks on Chhatra Union activists. We don’t support such attacks. A probe committee has been formed in this regard. We hope the culprits will be identified and punished after investigation,’ he said.

Nasim, also an Awami League presidium member, said this while addressing a press briefing after a meeting of Awami League-led 14-party held at Awami League president’s political office at Dhanmondi in the city.

Workers Party of Bangladesh President and Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon presided over the one-hour meeting that started at 12 noon.

On Sunday, about a hundred activists of Bangladesh Chhatra Union came under police attack near Officers’ Club on Shaheed Captain Mansur Ali Sarani as they tried to lay a siege to the DMP headquarters in protest against sexual harassments of women on the Dhaka University campus on April 14.

Meanwhile, on Monday, the police headquarters and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) formed two separate inquiry committees to investigate the incident.

Addressing the press briefing, Nasim said the 14-Party will host a reception to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at a convenient time for her successful leadership in having the Land Boundary Agreement ratified by India.

‘We think for her (Hasina) able leadership, we’ve been able to settle maritime and land boundary disputes peacefully with Myanmar and India through discussions. Fourteen-Party thinks problems can be resolved peacefully with neighbouring countries through holding bilateral discussions. The settlement of LBA issue is the last example of it.’

The AL leader came down hard on BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia for not congratulating the government for its role in having the LBA passed by both chambers of the India parliament. BNP only congratulated the Indian government.

President of Information Minister and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) Hasanul Haq Inu, Jatiya Party (JP) chairman and Environment and Forest Minister Anwar Hussain Manju, Saamyabadi Dal President Dilip Barua were, among others, present at the meeting.
