Chittagong: A young man was shot to death by a group of miscreants in GPO crossing area of Chittagong on Sunday morning.
The deceased is Ibrahim Manik, in his thirties.
The Kotwali Police Officer-in-charge Jasim Uddin said a group of miscreants swooped on Ibrahim and shot him at about 11:30am, leaving him dead on the spot.
However, it is still not clear what prompted the miscreants to kill Ibrahim, the OC added.
Later, police arrested one Rana in this connection.
Police quoting local people said Manik along with some members of Shecchashebak were having a conversation in front of a roadside shop at GPO crossing, when three miscreants riding a motorcycle came to the scene and opened fire to them. Manik died on the spot because of excessive bleeding. However, local people took him to hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Police and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officials visited the crime scene and collected evidence from the spot. Police also held a trader for interrogation in this connection.
Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) Deputy Commissioner Devdas Bhattyacharya said primarily it has been believed that Manik was killed centring a clash over establishing supremacy and other issues between factions of a group of former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders.
Former BCL leader Yasir Arafat claimed Manik was a member of Shecchashebak League ward committee.
