Tangail: The administration of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MNSTU) on Thursday suspended nine students in connection with the killing of an activist of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in a factional clash on the campus on Wednesday.

The suspended students are: AM Robiul Hasan Saju of Chemistry Department; Omar Faruq and Ashiqur Rahman of Environmental Sciences and Resource Management Department; Omar Faruq and Mohayminul Quaium of Textile Engineering Department; Ahad Khan and Kishore Dey of Information and Communication Technology Department, Monirul Islam of Computer Science and Engineering Department and Sayeedur Rahman of Criminology and Police Department, according to a notice by the administration.

Meanwhile, the MNSTU regent board in a meeting on Thursday formed a five-member probe committee, headed by former vice chancellor of Jahangirnagar University Sharif Enamul Kabir, to investigate the incident.

Earlier on Wednesday, the MBSTU administration suspended all the academic activities for an indefinite period after BCL activist ASK Mosharraf, a masters student of Criminology and Police Department, was killed in a factional clash on the campus on Wednesday.

The university’s proctor Khademul Islam told UNB on Wednesday that the supporters of Mosharraf and the supporters of Monir, a student of Computer Science and Engineering Department, got into a silly quarrel at the university’s Cafeteria around 2:45pm.

Following the quarrel, both the groups locked horns in an altercation, wielding sharp weapons at each other. At one stage, supporters of Monir allegedly hacked Mosharraf and his followers, including Badhan and Faisal, with sharp weapons.

Two crude bombs were also exploded on the campus during the clash.

The injured were admitted to Tangail Medical College Hospital (TMCH).  As the condition of Mosharraf deteriorated, he was referred to National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR).

Later, as his condition further deteriorated on his way to NITOR, Mosharraf was admitted to Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar where he succumbed to his injuries.

Tangail Model Police Station officer-in-charge Golam Mostafa said no one has filed a formal complaint in connection with the incident till Thursday evening.

Additional police forces have been deployed on the campus following the clash on Thursday, he added.
