Dhaka: Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Tuesday said the vested quarter is conspiring against Awami League as they can't defeat the party in elections.

"Plotters continue their conspiracy as they won't be able to defeat Awami League in elections," he said while speaking at a view-exchange meeting with the councilors of Dhaka South City Corporation (DNCC) at Mayor Mohammad Hanif Auditorium of Nagar Bhaban in the capital.

Quader, also road transport and bridges minister, termed the recent killing of AL lawmaker Manjurul Islam Liton as part of a deep-rooted conspiracy against the AL government that achieved a landslide victory in the polls earlier.

He said the conspirators exercised their 'test case' through the killing of Liton, who had raised his strong voice against the communal forces.

"No killer will go unpunished . . . If they (attackers) further want to do anything bad, the whole country will raise their strong protest," Quader categorically said.

The AL general secretary called upon all party leaders and activities to make the party programme on the occasion of Bangabandhu's Homecoming Day a successful.

Stressing the need for a vigorous campaign against substandard food items and drug abuse, Quader also urged the DSCC mayor and councilors to work unitedly to build a city free from all sorts of anti-social activities.

DSCC Mayor Mohammad Syed Khokon presided over the meeting. Awami League Joint Secretary General Mahabub-ul-Alam Hanif, Organizing Secretaries AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Enamul Haque Shamim and Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, Dhaka South City AL General Secretary Shahe Alam Murad, among others, also spoke on the occasion.
