Over 6,000 people were killed and about 16,000 injured in road accidents across the country in 2016, says a survey by Passenger Welfare Association of Bangladesh.

Association secretary general Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury revealed the survey findings at a press conference at the National Press Club in Dhaka on Wednesday, reports UNB.

The study, conducted based on newspaper reports, shows that a total 4,312 road accidents took place across the country in 2016, causing the huge number of casualties.

Mozammel Hoque said road accidents have become endemic in Bangladesh as the death toll, caused by road accidents, is not less than that of people killed in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq wars.

‘But, it is a matter of regret that although the silent killings are taking place in the country every day, nobody and even the government never gives importance to checking road crashes’, he said.

The right activist alleged that victims never get justice although they file cases over road accidents.

Former communication secretary Dr Md Mahabubur Rahman, Barrister Shafiqul Islam and Dr Mahbub Alam Talukder were, among others, present at the press conference.
