3 killed as speedboats capsize following collision in Padma

Madaripur: The bodies of three people were recovered from the River Padma near Kawrakandi Ghat at Shibchar upazila in Madaripur on Saturday after two speedboats capsized in the river on Friday night following a collision.

The deceased were Hosne Ara Lipi, 32, wife of police constable Haider Hossain of Bhanga upazila in Faridpur, Monwar Mridha, 18, son of Milon Mridha of Barisal and Ibrahim Madbar, 20, son of Rahim Madbar of Taltala area of Shibchar upazila in Madaripur.

Police and witnesses said a Kawrakandi-bound speedboat from Shimulia and another speedboat sank in the river following a collision between the two near Kawrakandi ghat on Friday morning due to dense fog.

All but the trio managed to swim ashore.

A rescue team of police, fire brigades and divers started their drive on Saturday morning and recovered the bodies of Mowar and Ibrahim from near the spot at about 5:00pm.

The team also recovered the body of Lipi from the same area at about 6:00pm.
