BNP plans ‘non-cooperation movement’

Dhaka: Finding the government unmoved to accept the demand for fresh polls despite prolonged transport blockade, the BNP-led 20-party alliance is reportedly planning to launch a non-cooperation movement alongside the current programmes to force the government to quit.
Before going for the non-cooperation movement, according to BNP sources, the alliance wants to intensify its ongoing movement through gearing up street picketing as it has found it ‘out of steam’ following Khaleda Zia’s younger son Arafat Rahman Koko’s death.
They said the alliance will in no way back off from the movement under any circumstances even if more of their senior leaders, including Khaleda Zia, are arrested.
According to a BNP policymaker, the alliance wants to keep the government as well as law-enforcers busy tackling blockade and hartal so that they can by time to create a solid ground for a non-cooperation movement through strengthening its professional bodies like of teachers, lawyers, doctors, engineers and others.
He said BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and some senior leaders have been maintaining contact with leaders of pro-BNP professional bodies and giving them necessary directions to prepare for the non-cooperation movement.
Sources close to Khaleda said as she is determined to continue the movement as long as it derive any positive outcome, and she will call for the non-cooperation movement as the final course of action to force the government to concede to their demand.
Khaleda Zia, acceding to party insiders, is likely to come up with such a call either in last week of February or early March subject to the party’s professional bodies’ preparations.
Before the announcement for the non-cooperation movement, the party men will employ their all efforts to isolate Dhaka from the country to encourage professionals to respond to the call for such an action programme taking risk of their jobs.
