HC summons 2 Jessore cops for torturing youth
Dhaka: The High Court on Sunday summoned two policemen of Kotwali police station of Jessore for torturing a young man allegedly for bribe.
An HC bench led by Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah issued a suo moto order following a newspaper report published over the incident, reports UNB.
The HC ordered sub-inspectors Nazmul and Hadibur Rahman of the police station to appear before it at 10: 30 am on January 25.
Besides, the court also ordered Superintendent of Police (SP) of Jessore for submitting a report over the reported incident by 30 days after investigation.
It also issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why legal actions would not be taken against the officials.
Secretary of Home Ministry, Inspector Genera of Police (IGP), Deputy Inspector General Police (DIG) of Khulna range, SP of Jessore, officer-in-charge of Kotwali Police Station have been asked to respond to the rule within two weeks.
Deputy Attorney General Taposh Kumar Biswas represented the state.
According to the newspaper report, police picked up Abu Sayed, 30, son of Nurul Haque of Talbaria village of Jessore Sadar upazila, from his residence on Wednesday and demanded TK 2 lakh bribe from Sayed.
The two policemen beat up the youth hanging him at the police station as he denied to give money, it said. Later, his family members paid TK 50,000 for his release.
On January 06, a national daily published the report with a picture of the youth being tortured at the police station.
