Brahmanbaria: A Brahmanbaria court on Sunday placed Haripur Union Council chairman Atikur Rahman Akhi, also the prime accused in a case filed over the attack on Hindu community at Nasirnagar in Brahmanbaria, on 5-day police custody for interrogation.

Senior judicial magistrate Sorafuddin Ahmmed passed the order after police produced him before the court seeking a seven-day police custody for quizzing, said court inspector Mahbubur Rahman.

Detectives on Thursday arrested the UC chairman from Bhatara in the capital in connection with the attack.

On October 30, some unruly people demolished 15 Hindu temples and vandalised over 100 houses in the upazila following a Facebook post that allegedly hurt the religious sentiment of the Muslim community.

Later, two cases were filed against 2,400 unidentified people in this connection.

However, Akhi went into hiding after the incident.
