Graft case: HC order on Jobaida’s appeal any day
Dhaka: The High Court will deliver its verdict any day on a petition filed by BNP senior vice-chairman Tarique Rahman’s wife Jobaida Rahman seeking cancellation of a case filed against her for acquiring wealth beyond the known sources of income.
An HC bench comprising Justice Obaidul Hassan and Justice Krishna Debnath kept the petition on CAV (curia advisari vult) completing the hearing on Tuesday, said Jobaida’s lawyer Barrister Kaiser Kamal.
Along with Kamal, Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali stood for Jobaida while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan stood for the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).
On September 26, 2007, the ACC filed a corruption case against BNP leader Tarique Rahman, his wife and mother in-law for concealing information in wealth statements and acquiring wealth worth over Tk 42.3 million beyond known sources of income, which was not included in their wealth statements submitted to the Commission.
Of the accused, Jobaida opened an FDR account of Tk 35 lakh acquiring wealth illegally.
On March 31, 2008, the ACC submitted a charge-sheet against them to a court.
On April 8, 2008, Jobaida filed a petition with the HC seeking cancellation of the case.
Following the petition, the HC passed an interim order staying the activities of the case and issued a rule asking the ACC to explain as to why the case should not be cancelled.
