Dhaka: BNP on Wednesday threatened to hold its future programmes at Suhrawardy Udyan without waiting for police permission.

‘We had repeatedly sought permission from the police for holding our rallies at Suhrawardy Udyan, but we’re denied it. So, BNP won’t wait for police permission anymore in the days to come, it’ll be taken away,’ said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, reports UNB.

The BNP leader issued the threat while speaking at a human chain programme in front of the Jatiya Press Club.

Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal arranged the programme protesting attacks on Barisal city unit BNP’s female leaders and activists while observing the party’s programme marking January 5 as ‘democracy killing day’.

BNP had sought permission for holding a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on January 7 to register its protest against January-5 parliamentary elections, boycotted by it. But, the party could not hold it as Dhaka Metropolitan Police denied it the permission.

Last year, the party was not allowed to hold a rally at the same venue marking November 7 as a ‘National Revolution and Solidarity Day’.

Rizvi said the government is depriving a political party like BNP of its constitutional rights by not giving it permission for its rallies.

He alleged that the government is conspiring to establish dictatorship in the country by annihilating democracy.

Rizvi criticised the government for what he said its continued repression on their party men, saying ‘Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina wants the blood of BNP leaders and activists, not democracy. Sheikh Hasina becomes happy when she sees the dead bodies of BNP leaders and activists and she rejoices it.’

He alleged that the killing incidents and repression on women are growing in the country alarmingly as the current ‘illegal regime is pampering the real offenders instead of punishing them’.
