No specifics in hand to pinpoint foreign funding of militants: DMP Commissioner

Dhaka: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia has said the police is yet to obtain any ‘specific’ information on foreign financing of militant activities.

The DMP Commissioner said this while talking to reporters at Azimpore Government Girls School and College on Wednesday, having concluded a program to distribute warm clothes among the destitute people.

Asaduzzaman said although law enforcers have already identified a number of local financiers of militancy and extremism, with many of them even now in police custody, nothing the police has uncovered or learnt relates to identifying specific foreign actors behind terrorism financing, reports UNB.

When asked whether militants get any political help, the DMP Commissioner refused to be drawn into making statements he couldn’t back up with evidence, especially ‘as investigation is going on.’

He did however say there is a definite ‘local connection’ with militancy, in terms of their patronage and protection networks.

Fielding a question from the gathered journalists, he took the chance to praise the newly formed Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of DMP, saying it has been working well in rooting out militancy, and wishing it continued success in its efforts — in conjunction with all other parts of the force,  as well as other security agencies of the state and society in general — to prevent terrorism and militancy, said Asaduzzaman.
