Dhaka: Gunmen stormed flat of a local Awami League leader in Dhaka’s Chamelibagh area on Wednesday evening and fired shots, injuring his mother.

The injured is Sharmin Yasmin Alo, in his fifties, mother of Ali Reza Rana, former organising secretary of ward-33 unit of Awami League.

Quoting flat inmates, police said a gang of gunmen, numbering around four, went to Rana’s apartment at 5th floor of a seven-storey building at Chamelibagh under Paltan Police Station at about 6:00pm and pressed the calling bell.

As Sharmin opened the door, the gangsters inquired about Rana to her, said sub-inspector Moniruzzaman of the police station.

When the AL leader’s mother replied that her son was not there inside, they opened fire on her and left the scene, he said.

With multiple bullet wounds at different parts of the body, Sharmin was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the SI added.
