PM’s speech frustrated people, says BNP
Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Thursday night said the Prime Minister’s address to nation has frustrated people as it is full of self‐praise and complacence without having any indication of political negotiation.
‘The government’s legitimacy crisis and ethics are now the main problem of the country. But, she (PM) avoided this political crisis in her speech,’ BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told an impromptu press conference.
‘All had expected that the Prime Minster would give a hint about a political understanding to restore democracy and holda fair election. As it’s missing in her speech, it has failed to meet the demand of time. We’ve got frustrated as the country’s people.’
BNP arranged the press conference at its Chairperson’s Gulshan office to give the party’s instant reaction to the Prime Minister’s speech.
Fakhrul also renewed their party’s stance in favour of democracy and political negotiation.
Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her address to the nation hoped that all the political parties will have the trust in the new Election Commission to be constituted by the President and join the next general election.
She addressed to the nation in the evening marking the 3rd anniversary of her present government’s tenure after winning the 5 January polls in 2014.
Fakhrul said many of the Prime Minister’s statistics on the government’s development activities are incorrect, untrue and baseless and full of tricks. ‘People from their daily experiences can understand whether the country is progressing or falling behind.
He said the Prime Minister by unilaterally blaming BNP for many bad things has demonstrated her undemocratic and one‐party attitude.
The BNP leader said the Prime Minister in a planned way avoided the issues relating to repressive acts, people’s democratic rights, shrinking democratic space, destroyed election system, corruption, plundering of banks, share market, the lack of public security, the rule of law and justice, degrading education quality, killing, enforced disappearance, rape and repression on women.
Fakhrul said they will come up with an elaborate reaction to the Prime Minister’s speech within a couple of days.
