Dhaka: The Inspector General of Police (IGP) on Tuesday submitted a ‘primary progress report’ to the High Court regarding the investigation into the sexual assault on women on Dhaka University campus during the Pahela Baishakh celebration on March 14.

The HC directed the IGP to place the next progress report in this connection on June 28.

An HC bench comprised by Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Haque and Justice Abu Taher M Saifur Rahman passed the order fixing June 28 for giving further orders on the issue.

According to the primary progress report, two separate probe bodies were formed by police while a case filed at Shahabag Police Station in connection with the incident.

On the other hand, the Dhaka University vice-chancellor appealed to the HC seeking some more time to submit the primary investigation report.

On April 14, some rowdy youths assaulted several women sexually at Suhrawardy Udyan gate near Dhaka University’s TSC during the celebration of the Bengali New Year.

Following the media reports about the incident, the HC on April 16 issued a suo moto rule asking the authorities concerned, including the DU administration, to explain as to why they should not be directed to take appropriate legal steps against the perpetrators.
