'We'll fight to the last drop of our blood'
Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday said their party will again be on the streets in due time and will fight to the last drop of their blood to ‘restore democracy’ in Bangladesh.
“Movement is carried out based on a strategy. There’s a rise and fall in politics...we’re on the streets and will surely be there again at a suitable time,” he said.
Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader further said, “We’re committed to fighting to the last. We’ll continue our struggle for the restoration of democracy and implementation of Ziaur Rahman’s ideal, even by sacrificing our last drop of blood.”
Democracy and Development Studies Bangladesh arranged the programme at the seminar room of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, marking the publication of the fourth edition of a book titled ‘Jotirmoy Zia and Kalomegher Dal’ written by poet Abdul Hye Shikder.
Narrating that their party leaders and activists have long been subjected to repressive acts by the government, Fakhrul said over 1,000 BNP leaders and activists were killed during the last one year. “Our over 500 leaders and activists were made disappeared while thousands others maimed... We’re a democratic party, but fighting against a fascist regime.”
He accused the government of trying to annihilate BNP with its ‘fascist forces’.
The BNP leader warned the government that it will not be able to destroy BNP by its repressive acts. “Even after inflicting immense torture on our party men, they (govt) couldn’t deviate any of them from BNP. It’s the strength of BNP and Ziaur Rahman.”
Fakhrul praised their chairperson Khaleda Zia for her leadership quality and her role in the country’s democratic movements.
“The people of Bangladesh were never defeated in their fight for existence. Now we’re also on a struggle to protect our existence, and finally we’ll turn victorious,” he told his party colleagues.
