Meherpur: An alleged robber was killed in a ‘gunfight’ between his associates and police at Rajnagar on the Meherpur-Chuadanga Highway in Sadar upazila, Meherpur, in the early hours of Wednesday.

The deceased is Khokan Dakat, a resident of Shishu Baganpara village of the upazila.

Police conducted a drive in the district town and arrested Khokan on Tuesday afternoon.

Following his confessional statement, a team of police launched a raid taking Khokan along to recover arms near Dwindatta Bridge in the area at about 3:00am.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, Khokan’s cohorts opened fire in a bid to snatch him, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate, which triggered a gunfight.

Khokan was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, while his associates managed to flee the scene.

Three police members were injured during the gunfight.

Later, police recovered the body and sent it to Meherpur Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Police also recovered a shutter-gun and five bullets from the spot.

The Sadar police said, Khokan was wanted in six cases, including murder and robbery.
