Dhaka: A Dhaka court on Thursday granted bail to Bangladesh Railway senior sub-assistant engineer Jahangir Alam, charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder in connection with the death of four-year-old child Jihad inside a 600-foot abandoned shaft in Shahjahanpur area, Dhaka, last year.

Jahangir Alam surrendered and sought bail at the court of Metropolitan Magistrate Ashoke Kumar Dutt at about 11:00am.

After the hearing, the court granted the bail in affidavit of Tk5,000 bond.

On 7 April, police submitted charge sheet against two people—Bangladesh Railway contractor and owner of AR Traders Abdus Salam and Railway senior sub-assistant engineer Jahangir Alam.

Shahjahanpur police inspector Abu Jafar, also the investigating officer (IO) of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court.

On 27 December, 2014, the four-year old boy, Jihad, died inside a 600-foot abandoned shaft of a water pump at Shahjahanpur Railway Colony.

On 28 December, his body was pulled out from the shaft 23 hours after he had slipped into it.

Later, Jihad’s father, Nasir Fakir, filed a case against Abdus Salam and Jahangir Alam on charges of negligence of duty.

On 8 March, a Dhaka court sent Abdus Salam to jail in the case rejecting his bail petition.
