Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Thursday complained that the government is spreading rumours through different state agencies against the party alongside continued repressive acts as part of its plot to weaken the party’s anti-government move.

‘The government is repeatedly attacking BNP and carrying out false and motivated campaign against it us using different agencies to weaken BNP and mislead people,’ said BNP vice chairman Selima Rahman.

She came up with the allegation at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan office in Dhaka.

The BNP leader said various conspiracies have been crafted against BNP and its leadership since 2008 to destroy the party.

‘Our chairperson, vice-chairman and other senior leaders have been implicated in different false cases while many leaders and activists sent to jails. Even our village leaders and activists can’t return homes. Despite that, we’re working for establishing people’s basic and democratic rights,’ Selima said.

Referring to a report of a vernacular daily titled ‘Unrest in BNP chairperson’s Gulshan Office’, she said such false, fabricated and cooked-up report is being circulated in different newspapers and online portals by government agencies to harm BNP.

Selima urged reporters to remain aware of misleading and false information provided by government agencies and suggested them contacting BNP spokesman or senior leaders to verify information about the party for making objective reports.

Defending the recent appointment of a party assistant organising secretary and an assistant office secretary, she said their party high command are making some new appointments to different posts of the party’s committees to make it vibrant and dynamic. ‘The officials of BNP chairperson’s office have no scope to play in role in giving any appointment.’

She lamented that the newspaper in its report presented false information about the new appointments of the two leaders.

BNP on Tuesday made Juba Dal senior vice-president Abdus Salam Azad its executive committee’s one of the assistant organising secretaries and Juba Dal central committee member Taiful Islam Tipu one of assistant office secretaries.

Selima said the two new appointments were made as the party is facing problem in running its official activities following the arrests of BNP office secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and some other senior leaders.
