Man killed in Kushtia ‘gunfight’

Kushtia: A man was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Alampur in Sadar upazila of Kushtia in the early hours of Thursday.
The deceased is Amirul Islam Amir, around 45 years old, a resident of the village of Ambaria at Mirpur upazila in Kushtia.
Police claimed Amir is member of an inter-district robber gang, also brother of outlawed extremist organisation Ganabahini’s leader Kasai Siraj.
The Kushtia police Detective Branch (DB) Inspector Sabbirul Alam said being tipped off that a gang of robbers were taking preparation for robber at Alampur on the Kushtia-Jhinaidah Highway, a joint team of DB and Alampur camp police went to the spot at a bout 1:00am.
Sensing the presence of law enforcer, the reported robber gang opened fire to them. Police also fired back, which triggered a gunfight. The firing continued for half an hour and left Amirul dead on the spot.
Two police members, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Shohag Milon, and Constable Humayun Kabir, were injured during the gunfight.
Amirul’s body was sent to Kushtia General Hospital for autopsy.
Police also recovered a locally made gun, three bullets, a saw, and a sharp knife from the spot.
