Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Saturday hoped that the President will constitute an impartial and capable search committee to form a stronger Election Commission (EC) as per people’s hopes and aspirations.

“The President has not yet formed the search committee. So, we don’t want to make any negative comment on it.  We believe he’ll fulfill people’s expectations by making such a search committee which will be able to understand people’s eye language,” he said.

The BNP leader further said, “We hope the search committee will be neutral and competent one to constitute a proper and stronger Election Commission.”

Fakhrul came up with the remarks while speaking at a representative council if Zia Parishad, a pro-BNP at form, at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in the city.

The President held a month-long dialogue with 31 political parties over the formation of the new EC as the tenure of the current Commission expires in February next.

According to a source at Bangabhaban, Adbul Hamid is going to form a five-member search committee very soon.

Fakhrul said all the state organs have been made dysfunctional through politicisation. “Even, the judiciary now can’t work independently while the mass media are regulated.”

He said the country’s financial sector has also been hit hard by unabated plundering and corruption by ruling party men.

The BNP leader urged all the political parties and people from all strata to get united to save the country from the ‘misrule and restore democracy and all civic rights’.
