Dhaka: A Dhaka court on Sunday placed Bangladesh National Cricket team player Arafat Sunny on a day police custody in a case filed over blackmailing a woman through exposing her personal photos on social networking site Facebook.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Pranab Kumar Hui granted the custody for interrogation.

Earlier, the case’s investigation officer Mohammadpur police Sub-inspector (SI) Yahya Ahmed placed Arafat before Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s (CMM) court and filed petition seeking five-day custody for quizzing.

CMM court General Registrar Officer (GRO) Nizamuddin told NTV Online Sunny’s counsel filed another plea for annulling the custody petition.

Sunny was produced before the court at about 11:00am.

Earlier, on Sunday morning, the Mohammadpur police arrested Bangladesh national team off-spinner Sunny in Aminbazar.

Investigation officer, Mohammadpur police Sub-inspector (SI) Yahya Ahmed said Arafat Sunny registered a fake account on the name of the woman, reported to be his girlfriend, and was blackmailing her by posting exposed photographs of her on Facebook.

Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Masudur Rahman said a team of Mohammadpur police conducted a drive in the area and arrested the cricketer at about 9:00am.

Jamaluddin Mir, officer‐in‐charge of the police station, said Nasrin Sultana, a friend of Sunny, filed the case against the cricketer under the ICT Act on 5 January.

Arafat Sunny is a left-arm off-spinner and left-handed batsman of Bangladesh National Cricket team. The 30-year-old player made his debut for Dhaka Division in 2001. He broke into Bangladesh’s one-day international (ODI) side in early 2014.

He took 2-31 in his first outing against Sri Lanka, but his two best performances came in November 2014 when he took 4-27 and 4-29 in two matches against Zimbabwe, in a good show of form ahead of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015.
