Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Sunday feared that though the search committee has sought names from political parties and planned to exchange views with eminent persons, the Prime Minister’s desire will finally be reflected on the Election Commission (EC) formation.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi voiced the apprehension at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office.

The search committee formed by President Abdul Hamid held its first meeting on Saturday asking each of the 31 political parties which took part in talks with the President over formation of the next EC to propose five names by Tuesday next.

The search committee members also deiced to sit with 12 eminent citizens of the country at 4 pm on Monday to take their opinions over the fresh EC formation.

President Abdul Hamid on Wednesday formed a six-member search committee, headed by Supreme Court's Appellate Division judge Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, for reconstituting the Election Commission (EC).

Rizvi said the results of talks over the Election Commission formation in the past were zero while the caretaker government system revoked through the 15th amendment to the constitution only to reflect an individual’s will though all MPs, Awami League leaders, noted citizens and constitutional experts had given opposite opinions.

“The same way, one person’s (PM’s) desire was reflected on the current Election Commission formation. Even after the President’s dialogue with political party this time, the search committee has been formed unilaterally. So, there’s no chance to reject the possibility of reflecting the one persons’ will in constituting the Election Commission,“ the BNP leader said.

He said people are in doubt whether the search panel will be able to form a neutral and stronger EC as it has been formed with pro-Awami League people.

Rizvi also alleged that the button of the last search committee formed by late President Zillur Rahman was also in the Prime Minister’s hand.

Asked whether their party will propose any names to the search committee for the fresh Election Commission, he said BNP is yet to decide about it.

The BNP leader, however, said their party policymakers at their meeting tonight may take a decision in this regard.
