Dhaka: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq on Sunday told Parliament that over 40 lakh cases were disposed of in courts in the last three years.

"A total of 4,064,537 cases were disposed of in the courts across the country till December 31, 2016 after the present government took office in 2014," he said replying to a starred question from Awami League MP Firoja Begum Chino (Women Seat-33).

The minister said the present government has taken effective measures to reduce the backlog of cases in different courts.

He said the trial proceedings of both the cases filed over the August 21 grenade attack are now at the final stage after the deposition of witnesses.

About the sensational Narayanganj seven-murder cases, he said the court has recently handed down the verdict completing the trial proceedings within only 53 working days.

Two cases were filed with Fatullah Model Police Station on April 28, 2014 and May 7, 2014 over the seven-murder incident. “The court framed charges on January 27, 2016 and recorded testimonies of 106 out of 127 witnesses,” he said.

"The district and sessions judge passed the verdict on January 16 last after closing the arguments within only 53 working days," the minister said.
