Dhaka: The High Court on Monday issued a rule asking the authorities concerned to explain why the appointment of a Dhaka University lecturer should not be declared illegal.

An HC bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman issued the rule following a petition.

The Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor, pro vice-chancellors — education and administration-- university registrar, chairman of Philosophy department, assistant director (PR) and Khandaker Tofayel Ahmed who was appointed as a lecturer of the university ‘violating rules’, were made respondents to the rule, which is returnable in 10 days.

Advocate Sagir Anwar and Barrister Sarwar Payel stood for the petitioner while deputy attorney general Mokhlesur Rahman represented the state.

HM Miraj Sourav, a candidate for the post of lecturer of DU Philosophy Department, filed the writ petition challenging the legality of the appointment of Tofayel Ahmed.

According to the writ petition, the DU issued a circular on July 2, 2016 for appointing two lecturers to the Philosophy department. As per the requirement, the applicants must have CGPA 4.25 in both SSC and HSC examinations.

Completing the recruitment process, the DU appointed five lecturers on December 29, 2016. Among the five, Khandaker Tofayel Ahmed secured 3.19 CGPA in the two examinations and his appointment was given ‘violating the rules’.
