President, PM pay last respect to Suranjit
Dhaka: President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday paid their last respect to veteran Awami League leader and former minister Suranjit Sengupta at South Plaza of the Parliament.
First the President and then the Prime Minister placed wreaths on the coffin. They also stood there in solemn silence for some time as a mark of respect to the late leader.
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, leader of Opposition in Parliament Rawshan Ershad, cabinet members, advisers to the prime minister, members of parliament and leaders of different political parties as well as political associates of late Suranjit Sengupta and his relatives and well-wishers were present.
Before placing wreaths by the president and the prime Minister, a smart contingent of the Bangladesh Police gave guard of honour to the late leader who was also a freedom fighter.
Later, Sheikh Hasina, also the AL chief, flanked by senior leaders of Awami League, placed another wreath on the coffin of Suranjit Sengupta.
Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, leader of Opposition in Parliament Rawshan Ershad, Chief Whip ASM Firoz, leaders of 14 -party alliance also placed wreaths to pay tributes to late Suranjit.
Leaders of various political parties, including Workers Party President and Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Rashed khan Menon, JSD President and Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu, Jatiya Party (Manju) President and Forest and Environment Minister Anwar Hossain Manju also placed wreaths on Suranjit’s coffin.
Wreaths were also placed on behalf of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) by its central Leader Moudud Ahmad.
Later, a special prayer was held seeking the eternal peace of the departed soul of late Suranjit who was elected member of parliament seven times.
Earlier, Chief Whip ASM Firoz delivered speech highlighting life and works of the veteran Awami League while his son Soumen Sengupta also spoke on the occasion.
