Remove Themis idol from Supreme Court: Hefazat
Chittagong: Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh on Saturday demanded removal of the idol of Greek Goddess of Justice from the Supreme Court premises.
It also urged the government to reform the country’s existing judiciary.
Hefazat secretary general Junaid Babunagari made the demand at a press conference at Chittagong Press Club.
Mentioning that there is no such idol in the apex courts of the US and neighbouring India, he said there cannot be an idol in the Supreme Court of a Muslim majority country like Bangladesh.
Claiming that the idol of Greek Titaness, Themis, is hurting the religious sentiments of Muslims, the Hefazat leader said the country’s people will not tolerate it.
Talking about the country’s existing laws, Babunagari said the judiciary is still functioning as per the laws formulated during the British colonial rule. “Admitting the failure, our judiciary and laws must be overhauled based on justice,” he said.
He also said they will submit memorandums to the Prime Minister and the Chief Justice on February 14 and stage demonstrations in the city and the capital on February 24 to press home their demands.
