Road crashes take 6 lives in 4 districts

Dhaka: Six people were killed in separate road crashes in Natore, Satkhira, Gazipur and Rajshahi districts on Saturday.

In Natore, two people were killed when a pickup hit a truck from behind at Srirampur on Banpara-Hatikumrul highway in Baraigram upazila in the morning.

The deceased were identified as Phulchand, 35, of Bhuapur upazila in Tangail, and Shahid, 35, of Ishwarganj upazila in Mymensingh.

GM Shamsun Nur, officer-in-charge of Banpara highway police station, said the fish-laden pickup from Mymensingh hit a stationary truck from behind around 6am, leaving the duo, passengers of the van, dead on the spot.

On information, highway police recovered the bodies and sent those to Natore Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

In Satkhira, a class-VI student was killed as a trolley rammed his bicycle in Bashtola area of Kaliganj upazila in the morning.

The deceased was identified as Abdul Gaffar, a student of Pilot High School in the upazila.

Jayedul Islam, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station, said the trolley hit Gaffar’s bicycle around 10:30 am, leaving him dead on the spot.

In Gazipur, two people were killed and 20 others injured as a bus and a truck plunged into a roadside ditch after the two vehicles collided in Chakkrabarti area on Chandra-Nabinagar Highway in the evening.

Police said the Kaliakoir-bound running bus abruptly stopped on the road to save a battery-run auto-rickshaw, suddenly appeared before it, in Chakkrabarti area.

At the same time, a speeding truck of the same direction hit the steady bus and in the aftermath both vehicles fell into the road side ditch, leaving two male passengers of the bus dead on the spot.

In Rajshahi, Abdur Razzak, 59, an official of Palli Bidyut Samity, was killed when a truck hit him in Kathalbaria area of Puthia upazila on Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway on Saturday.

Shibpur Highway Police Camp in-charge Sergeant Monir Hossain said the speeding truck hit Razzak, son of Amzad Hossain of Pustigachha village of Sirajganj district, in Kathalbaria area while walking beside the road, leaving him critically injured.

Locals rescued him and took him to Puthia health complex and later shifted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) where he succumbed to his injuries at noon.
