Modi to receive award for Vajpayee
New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will receive the 'Friends of Bangladesh Liberation War Award' on behalf of former Indian prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee from President Abdul Hamid during his two-day state visit to Bangladesh beginning on 6 June.
The Friends of Bangladesh Liberation War Award initiated by the ruling Awami League government has been conferred upon 226 Indians so far, including President Pranab Mukherjee, during his 2013 Dhaka visit.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi also received the highest award Bangladesh Freedom Honour conferred upon her mother-in-law and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi for her unequivocal support to Bangladesh’s freedom in July 2011.
Diplomatic sources said that arriving in Dhaka in the morning on June 6, Modi will first pay homage to freedom fighters and martyred soldiers of the 1971 Liberation War at the National Monument.
He will pay homage to Bangladesh’s Founding Father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing floral wreaths at Bangabandhu Bhaban in Dhamandondi-32, Dhaka.
