BNP to offer PM talks on election-time govt

Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Monday said it will now place a proposal for an election-time supportive government and urge the Prime Minister to take steps for engaging in talks over the issue.

Speaking at press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also said they are not going to approach the President to take initiatives for dialogue on the election-time government as he has already ‘committee misdeeds’ over the formation of the Election Commission (EC), reports UNB.

‘Now people are talking about supportive government as they strongly feel that a fair national election will not be possible unless a neutral administration is installed. So, an election-time supportive government is a must for fair and credible polls’, he said.

The BNP leader further said, ‘We’ll definitely present a proposal on a cooperative-administration and call upon the government to take initiatives for talks. We’ll give the Prime Minister our proposal urging her to accept it. Otherwise, she’ll have to shoulder all the responsibility for the emerging situation.’

Asked whether they will go to President Abdul Hamid with their supportive government proposal as they did earlier about their chairperson’s proposal on the EC, Fakhrul said, ‘We’re not thinking about it right now. What will be the use of going to the President as he has completed his task? He has already committed the misdeeds he was supposed to do.’

Turning to the new Election Commission, he said the head of the Commission is not a capable person for the post. ‘We’ve already cleared before people about the new CEC’’s political and personal positions. He’s not that much qualified to be the CEC.’

Replying to a question, he said they will decide later whether their party will join the national election under the new EC.

‘But we’ll join local polls as we did in the pas since it’s an ongoing process.’

The BNP secretary general also said their party will soon reconstitute their party’s Dhaka city unit.
