Bangladesh, India working to finalise Sheikh Hasina’s Delhi visit
Dhaka: India wants to work with Bangladesh taking its all internal parties on board on important issues like Teesta water sharing agreement and Ganges barrage project as both sides are now working to finalise dates for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s New Delhi visit.
Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla met Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque at the Foreign Ministry on Monday afternoon and discussed various issues of mutual interest, including those crucial ones, reports UNB.
They also discussed the areas of existing cooperation and noted the progress made on energy and connectivity fronts, Foreign Ministry sources said.
As part of ongoing cooperation between the two countries a number of incoming visits will take place in the coming weeks before the visit of Prime Minister to New Delhi, Indian side indicated.
Meanwhile, Indian Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar is likely to be here on February 23 on a brief visit to discuss issues of mutual interest with special focus on Sheikh Hasina’s next visit to New Delhi.
There is a possibility that the Prime Minister’s visit will take place in April, diplomatic sources said.
However, The Times of India reported that Sheikh Hasina is scheduled to visit India in March, a visit that was originally scheduled for December 2016.
Mamata, who had accompanied Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his trip in June 2015, had reportedly agreed to complete negotiations on two big projects — Teesta water sharing agreement and Ganges barrage project.
On the ground, neither of these projects appears to be anywhere close to reality, The Times of India report claims.
On January 4, Indian Minister of State for External Affairs MJ Akbar said they are trying their level best to create an internal consensus on Teesta issue.
‘We hope there will be an agreement between the centre and Bengal on Teesta and on other water related issues. And we are absolutely certain that the spirit that has been created by Prime Minister Modi and Sheikh Hasina will prevail and hopefully will enable us to solve the outstanding issues as well,’ he added.
The Indian Foreign Secretary will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and senior government officials during his stay in Dhaka.
The two countries are taking preparations dozens of documents, including deals for using Chittagong and Mongla ports by India.
On November 30, Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar visited Bangladesh and had discussions with the political and military leaderships of Bangladesh apart from proposing a number of new initiatives to enhance ties.
