New CEC, commissioners take over
Dhaka: The newly appointed Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and four other election commissioners took over charge on Wednesday.
CEC KM Nurul Huda and four other election commissioners -- Mahbub Talukder, Md Rafiqul Islam, Kabita Khanam and Brig Gen (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury -- took over their charge around 4:25pm.
Earlier, Chief Justice SK Sinha administered the oath of the newly appointed CEC and four other election commissioners at the Supreme Court Judges' Lounge at 3:00pm.
On February 6 last, President Abdul Hamid reconstituted the five-member Election Commission (EC) making former secretary KM Nurul Huda the CEC.
The five-year tenure of CEC Kazi Rakibuddin and three election commissioners expired on February 8 last while that of another election commissioner on Tuesday.
The four election commissioners are former additional secretary Mahbub Talukder, former secretary Md Rafiqul Islam, former district and sessions judge Kabita Khanam and Brig Gen (retd) Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury.
The new Election Commission will conduct the next general election scheduled for January, 2019.
