Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to leave here tomorrow for Germany on a three-day official visit to attend 53rd Munich Security Conference to be held from February 17.

‘Twenty heads of states and government . . . will join the conference which is being considered as the ‘Best Think Tank Conference’ in the present discourses on world security,’ Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali told a media briefing at his office.

But, he said, during the visit the Bangladesh premier would also held bilateral talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, reports BSS.

Ali named some of the countries to be represented in the conference by their heads of governments or states and added international organizations like NATO, EU, Green Peace, Transparency International and other international organisations also would join the event.

‘Munich Security Conference started its journey in 1963. Different issues of global security and order were discussed at the Munich conference over five decades,’ the minister said.

He said alongside the core security matters, related issues like food, water, health, environment, refugee and immigration also were expected to feature the conference against the backdrop of current global situation and interests of international community.

Asked if the Rohingya issue could come up for discussion in the conference, Ali said so far Bangladesh alone virtually dealt with the issue but it now gradually drew the international attention.

‘The entire world now stands by Bangladesh on the Rohingya issue . . . now international community understands that Bangladesh would not be able to resolve Rohingya issue,’ he said.

Ali said Sheikh Hasina would join different sessions and sideline events of the conference on issues particularly including climate change.

The Bangladesh premier, he said, is set to meet hold a bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Markel in Munich on February 18.

‘They will discuss different matters of mutual interests including trade and investment, climate change, current refugee and migration crisis in Europe during the meeting,’ Ali said.

The minister said Bangladesh and Germany already had a deep relation and the bilateral meeting was expected to further strengthen mutual understanding between the countries. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will return home on February 19.
