Dhaka: A suspected member of an outlawed party was killed in a reported gunfight with police at Maura Bongram in Pangsha upazila early on Friday.

The deceased is Moazzem Fakir, a member of ‘Bipul Bahini’, an outlawed gang.

Pangsha Police Officer-in-charge Mofazzal Hossain said police arrested Moazzem on Thursday night. During his interrogation, police came to know that his associates were gathering at Maura Bongram village.

Later, a police team along with Moazzem conducted a drive in the area at about 2:30am. Sensing the police presence, Moazzem’s associates opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.

At one stage, Moazzem was caught in the line of fire and suffered bullet injuries while the others managed to flee, police said.

He was taken to Panghsa Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.

Police said they also recovered one shutter gun and one bullet from the spot.

Moazzem was wanted in a number of cases, including that of murder, the OC said.
