Indian FS in Dhaka, meeting with PM today evening
Dhaka: Indian Foreign Secretary Dr S Jaishankar arrived in Dhaka on Thursday afternoon on a brief visit which is viewed as 'significant' ahead of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's proposed New Delhi visit.
Jaishankar arrived in Dhaka airport at 2:25pm directly from Beijing where he had a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday and attended a key bilateral strategic dialogue there, a senior official told UNB.
He will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at Shangsad Bhaban (parliament building) at 5:00pm (Thursday) and will discuss issues of priorities, including the proposed visit, that might take place in April, said another official.
Jaishankar is here at the invitation of Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque. The two Foreign Secretaries will hold meeting at a city hotel this evening and will review the areas of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
They are also expected to discuss the issues of mutual interest and the proposed visit of the Sheikh Hasina in details.
The Indian Foreign Secretary is also likely to meet Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali before wrapping up his less than 24-hour visit. He will leave Dhaka on Friday morning.
Earlier, official spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs Vikas Swarup said Jaishankar and his Bangladesh counterpart Shahidul Haque will review the areas of bilateral cooperation between the two countries, including high-level visits.
Bangladesh-India relations reached a 'new height' since the two countries completed procedures for the ratification of a 1974 border pact during a visit by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Dhaka in 2015.
Prime Minister Hasina, who was scheduled to visit India in December, is now expected to undertake the visit within months.
