Cop jailed over DU student torture

Dhaka: Police officer convicted for torturing a Dhaka University student was sent to jail on Sunday after he had surrendered to a Dhaka court.
Former Khilgaon police officer-in-charge, Helal Uddin, earlier was jailed for three years.
He surrendered on Sunday to Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate Court and pleaded bail.
But, additional chief metropolitan magistrate Alamgir Kabir Raj rejected his bail plea and sent him to prison.
Earlier on 17 May Helal was tired in absentia when he was handed down the imprisonment sentence.
Helal was found guilty of torturing Dhaka University biochemistry and molecular biology student Abdul Kader and implicating him in false cases.
According to the case proceedings, Abdul Kader was held by police on robbery charges on 16 July 2011 and tortured in police custody.
Following media outcry and later High Court’s order, police high command looked into the case suspending three Khilgaon policemen, including OC Helal.
Being acquitted of all charges brought against him in January 2012, Kader filed a case against the then Khilgaon police officer-in-charge Helal Uddin months later on 23 January in 2012.
Later on 26 March Helal was indicted. Court took cognizance of the charge-sheet on 1 October.
