Jihad’s death: 4 including railway engr jailed for 10yrs
Dhaka: A Dhaka court handed over 10 years of imprisonment to four people including a Bangladesh Railway engineer in a case filed over the death of three-year-old Jihad, who died after falling into an abandoned deep tube-well in Dhaka’s Shahjahanpur.
The court also fined Tk 2lakh each and in default 2 years more in jail.
Dhaka Special Court-5 Judge Dr Mohammad Akhteruzzaman announced the verdict on Sunday afternoon.
The convicts are Bangladesh Railway Senior Sub Assistant engineer Mohammad Jahangir Alam, contractor of M/S SR House Shafiqul Islam alias Abdus Salam, Kamalapur Railway assistant engineer Mohammad Nasir Uddin, and electrical engineer Zafor Ahmed Shaki.
However, the court also acquitted assistant engineers, Dipak Kumar Bhowmik and Mohammad Saiful Islam, from the charges.
Earlier, on 8 February, the court fixed 26 February for declaring the verdict after completing a rebuttal session.
Earlier on 7 April 2016, police submitted the charge-sheet over Jihad’s death.
On 27 December 2014, Jihad died inside a 600-foot abandoned shaft of a water pump at Shahjahanpur Railway Colony.
On 28 December, his body was pulled out from the shaft 23 hours after he had slipped into it.
Later, Jihad’s father, Nasir Fakir, filed a case against Abdus Salam and Jahangir Alam on charges of negligence of duty.
On 8 March 2016, a Dhaka court sent Abdus Salam to jail in the case rejecting his bail petition.
