Dhaka: A Dhaka court on Monday will deliver its verdict in a case filed over the killing of a Rajshahi University student Waheeda Shifat.

On 12 February, Speedy Trial Tribunal-3 Justice Sayeed Ahmed fixed the date after hearing arguments of both the parties in the case.

The public prosecutors Mahbub Ahmed said 22 out of the 32 witnesses testimony have been recorded.

The accused of the case are, Sifat’s husband, Mohammad Asif Prisley, father-in-law Advocate Mohammad Hossain Ramzan, mother-in-law Nazmun Nahar Nazli, and, Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH)’s forensic department  former physician, Jobaidur Rahman, who did the first autopsy of Sifat’s body.

Of the accused, Asif is now in jail while others are on bail.

According to the case statement, Sifat, a student of Journalism and Mass Communication department of the University of Rajshahi, was killed at her in-laws’ residence in Mahishbathan area of Rajshahi on 29 March, 2015. Primarily her in-laws claimed Sifat was committed suicide. However, a three-member medical board of Rangpur Medical College Hospital found evidence of murder.

The second autopsy report said she died of wounds.

Mizanur Rahman Khandaker, Sifat’s uncle, filed a case with Rajpara police. The case filed under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act claims that she was murdered for dowry.

Later, on 12 July 2016, the case was shifted from Rajshahi to Dhaka’s Speedy Trial Tribunal 3 following a petition of the plaintiff.

The tribunal began the trial proceedings on 11 November 2016.

On 23 March 2016, the case’s investigating officer Criminal Investigation Department (CID) former senior assistant superintendent of police Ahmed Ali pressed charges against four people to Rajshahi Chief Metropolitan Megistrate’s (CMM) court.
