Dhaka: A bus driver, who suffered injuries in a clash between transport workers and law enforcers in capital Dhaka’s Gabtali area on Wednesday morning, has died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

The deceased was Shahinur Prodhan alias Shah Alam, 38, a driver of ‘Baishakhi Paribahan’ and son of Sayer Uddin Prodhan of Balaghata village in Panchbibi upazila of Joypurhat. 

Alam, who was undergoing treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of DMCH, succumbed to his injuries at about 6:30pm, said Jesmin Nahar, resident surgeon of the casualty department of the hospital.

Several transport workers, including Shah Alam, were injured in a clash with police and members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at capital's Gabtali Bus Terminal in the morning.

The clash erupted when some transport workers prevented some anti-strike workers from taking their vehicles out to the streets in the morning.

At one stage, the law enforcers charged baton and lobbed teargas shells as well as fired rubber bullets to disperse the protesters.

Bangladesh Road Transport Workers Federation enforced the countrywide indefinite strike on Tuesday protesting two court verdicts –- one sentencing life imprisonment to a bus driver in a case filed for a road accident that killed five people, including noted filmmaker Tareque Masud and cinematographer Mishuk Munier while the other sentencing another drive to death in another case filed over a road accident.

The workers resumed the operation of vehicles on Wednesday afternoon withdrawing their indefinite strike which had created a serious countrywide travel chaos for 36 hours.
